The Lyons Center is set in a good-sized city park that hosts basketball tournaments and other recreational activities. And its facilities have offered the neighborhood many community amenities for decades including dance classes, health fairs, and community theater.
Famous Tipitina'sEast Riverside is anchored on the other end by one of the best-loved music clubs in all of New Orleans. For decades, locals have flocked to Tipitinas to dance endlessly to the music of the Neville Brothers, Marcia Ball, Kermit Ruffins and Bruce Daigrepont to name just a few. Before Tipitinas installed air conditioning, club goers would head to their cars whenever the band would break to change out of their sweat soaked t-shirts into one of several fresh shirts theyd packed for that purpose.
Formerly the 501 Club, Tipitina's was founded by Hank Drevich as a clubhouse for Professor Longhair in his declining years. Professor Longhair was one of New Orleans greatest R&B pianists, said to have been a large influence on Fats Dominos sound. Tipitinas honors Professor Longhair with the large banner of his image over the stage. And Professor Longhair honored the club by writing a song called Tipitinas one of his most famous. Recently, Tipitinas unveiled a New Orleans Walk of Fame on the sidewalk outside to commemorate the many New Orleans musicians who have had such an impact on music around the world.
