Read Boulevard West is a moderate income neighborhood in New Orleans East with suburban style housing (Census 2002).

Short history of Read Boulevard West

Much of New Orleans East was originally wet grass marshes and cypress swamp. Development of New Orleans East occurred after much of the rest of the city had been developed. The lag in development was due partly to drainage problems in the area.

In the mid-1800s Bayou Sauvage was filled in and a road was created which we now call Chef Menteur Highway.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, substantial numbers of dwellings-both doubles and single-family detached-were built in the Castle Manor and Cerise subdivisions located along the higher elevations of the Chef Menteur Ridge.

Still development of the area was slow because the Industrial Canal, completed in 1923, created a barrier between the city and this eastern area of New Orleans. Access to the area was limited until the I-10 and the Seabrook Bridge were completed in the 1960s. Later subdivisions, such as Wimbledon, were built farther from Chef Menteur.
